6th December - Wendy Buckle  John Dickinson and his silk-thread paper

Stamp collectors know about John Dickinson because of his silk-thread paper, used initially for Mulready envelopes. But there’s a bigger story than that. Buying his first mill in 1809 he expanded rapidly through smart business practice and technical innovation. This presentation will look at the company during his lifetime, including the invention and use of silk-thread paper, followed by a brief look at what happened to the company after his death, and at some of the 20th century philatelic aspects of Dickinson’s.

21st November - Les Ashton-Smith  Alphonse Mucha, his life and work

Alphonse Mucha, the renowned Czech artist, has left an indelible mark on the world of the visual arts and a profound impact on the Art Nouveau movement. Born on July 24, 1860 in IvanĨice, Moravia (now in the Czech Republic), the story of Mucha’s journey from humble beginnings to international acclaim, and his profound impact on the new country of Czechoslovakia in terms of stamps, currency and cultural legacy, is told using various images, stamps, and covers.

15th February: Gary Cook The Eiffel Tower

The  Eiffel Tower was the major attraction at the 1889 Paris World Exposition. It became a major tourist attraction and generated an emerging demand for souvenirs especially for illustrated postcards. This presentation shows the way the Eiffel Tower Company provided postcards for tourists to record their visit and tell friends and relatives.

 

9th January: Les-Ashton-Smith Marie Curie

A look at the life and work of the pioneering physicist and chemist Marie Curie, the first woman to win a Nobel Prize.
