Birthe will give a PowerPoint show and display based on a five-frame exhibit, My Dearest Mama – Travels with my Aunt. A shorter second half of the meeting will be a PowerPoint summary of the revised SREV and Guidelines for Open Philately accompanied by a display showing examples from three Open Philately exhibits.
My dearest Mama presents picture postcards, almost all ‘Hilsen fra’ and ‘Gruss aus’ cards from the period 1890-1910 illustrating Alice’s travels with her aunt, Heloise, to Copenhagen, travelling across Denmark to Schleswig, which was German at the time, visiting aunts and uncles, cousins and second cousins. This is an entirely fictitious story with an extensive family tree, and the daily letters Alice writes home to her mother in London. The historical background is thoroughly researched from the 1864 War between Denmark and Prussia-Austria, which Denmark lost and had to surrender the Duchies of Schleswig and Holstein to Prussia-Austria. Northern Schleswig was culturally very close to Denmark, and with enforced new legislation on citizenship, language, etc. many Danish-minded families split up, some remaining in Schleswig, others moving away from their homelands to Denmark.
Open Philately became an FIP class at the 78th FIP Congress in Macao on 1 July 2026 with a Committee of 44 delegates nominated by national federations and an elected Bureau (executive committee). Even though Open Philately became accepted as a ‘discipline’ by the FIP in 2012, it did not have a committee or a bureau and only by 2023-2024 did Open Philately have three FIP accredited jurors worldwide. The presentation is an update of the previous Guidelines with illustrations.
This is a meeting which we hope will appeal to exhibitors and non-exhibitors alike: for those who compete it is a rare chance to talk to an international judge about these disciplines, and for those who only wish to enjoy the material it is an opportunity to see world-class displays on fascinating subjects..
